Who is a candidate for SonoCiné?
SonoCiné breast screening is currently being used for investigational
use only. A study of 500 high-risk women and women with known mammographic or physical abnormalities is
being conducted. It is anticipated that SonoCiné will be of benefit for those women who are at
high risk of breast cancer and/or those women whose breasts are
of sufficient radiographic density to lessen the diagnostic accuracy of
mammography. The latter situation tends to occur in thin young
women with small breasts. However the only way to know if a woman has this type of breast is with a
mammogram.
Who should not have SonoCiné?
SonoCiné is less effective in breasts that are either fatty or large (greater than a ‘D’ cup or a
40 inch chest). Using ultrasound, cancers are more
difficult to recognize in fatty tissue than in glandular (dense) breast tissue. Using mammography, the
opposite is true. Also ultrasound is limited in its ability to penetrate large breasts. Consequently
SonoCiné is not recommended for women with breasts larger than a ‘D’ cup or with a chest
circumference greater than 40 inches, or for women whose breasts are mostly fatty tissue.
How should I prepare for a SonoCiné?
No particular preparation for the examination is necessary except that clothing should be worn that will
allow you to easily disrobe above the waist.
